It is with great sadness that Lydney RFC has learned of the passing of one of its greatest ever players and longest serving Captain John Morris.
As a scrum half “Copper” played over 450 games for the club, as well as representing Gloucestershire, Western Counties and playing against the touring Wallabies and Springboxs in the 1960’s. No less than Australia’s legendary No 9 and captain Ken Catchpole declared Copper to be the best half back he had encountered in Britain.
His influence on the town of course went much further, as a Sports Master at Lydney Grammar School and then Whitecross he nurtured the future generations of Lydney’s talent acting as mentor as well as coach to many a future Lydney player.
An extremely talented sportsman he also played cricket for Lydney for many years.
A true giant of the town, he will be sorely missed.
