A Christmas Message from Our DOR
It’s been an eventful year, as it always seems to be at Lydney Rugby Club—there’s certainly never a dull moment!
Our young, successful Colts side has transitioned into the newly promoted United side. It’s been a sharp welcome to senior rugby for them, but they’ve more than handled themselves at this level. I’m confident we’ll start to see a few of them breaking through to the 1st team in the next couple of seasons, which is exactly what we need. However, this can only happen if we maintain a vibrant and thriving junior section.
This doesn’t happen overnight, but the hard work is well and truly going on behind the scenes. Over the past 12 months, we’ve added more juniors and age groups, which is crucial for a bright future. We can’t just focus on the present; we must provide for the next generation.
The United side has certainly benefited from this initial influx. They’ve been competitive in all their fixtures, picking up a few wins along the way. It’s important for us to have two senior sides playing at their highest possible levels, but it’s equally vital for these young lads to gain league exposure, which only accelerates their development. As a result, we’ve seen several lads break into the 1st team this season.
Our 1st team started the season incredibly well, continuing the work of the past 18 months to play positive, attractive rugby. When you play this way, there will always be some tough days, but the good has far outweighed the bad so far. Our target this season was to achieve greater consistency, and we feel there has been progression in this area. However, we’re still disappointed with a few results and know there’s much more to come from this group. I asked you to be patient with this team a few seasons ago, and now you’re starting to see them grow into the players we saw the potential in.
Seeing the floods return a few weeks ago was dreadful for our community and couldn’t have come at a worse time for local homes, businesses, and sports clubs. But the incredible work ethic, generosity, and determination to get our rugby club from two feet of water to hosting a league game in just six days was remarkable. It’s a testament to what makes our club special and why it’s the heartbeat of our community. Thank you!
Last Saturday, we welcomed Matson to Regentsholme for “the Christmas game,” which is always a special occasion. The sheer number of supporters and the atmosphere at the ground made it an unforgettable day. The more days we can create like that, the better it is for everyone. On that note, I must also acknowledge the support you give us away from home. It’s just as impressive and doesn’t go unnoticed by other clubs. We’re incredibly fortunate to have you follow us through thick and thin!
My final thank you goes to our army of volunteers and sponsors. Simply put, without your continued support, the club wouldn’t exist—or certainly not at a competitive level. Your efforts are never taken for granted.
