Lydney U13’s 25 Royal Wotton Bassett 19

Lydney welcome Royal Wooten Bassett to Bathurst park for the first meeting between the two sides. Having won their county cup last season this was always going to be a hard encounter.

Lydney started the stronger of the two teams and were quickly in front due a powerful run from our tight head prop Frank Barkley crashing through the defence out wide. This was the start of dominant period for Lydney where two more well constructed tries were scored through the back line with Will Butcher and Ollie Taylor. Both scored through flowing moves through the back line which looked dangerous all afternoon.

Second half Lydney started slowly which allowed Wotten to score a couple of quick tries. The Lydney boys had to dig deep and started to work hard around the breakdown. A series of forward drives took the Lydney team into the 22 where Captain Charlie Beddis eluded several tackles to score and get Lydney firing again.

From the restart the Lydney pack again started to dominate and after a string of drives a kick was put through which was chased into the corner. The Wotton winger had no choice but to run in to touch. From the free pass the Lydney hooker Jack George powered through to get Lydney their fifth try and give the team some breathing room.

Wotton managed to get a third try with the clock ticking down but it was Lydney who held on for a hard fought victory.

A great game of rugby played against a well drilled side with all coaches and spectators applauding the skill and commitment shown.

Drive on Lyd!
