Great morning for some running rugby with the sun shining and the rain passed through.
The Lydney boys still on a high from their tournament victory last weekend always looked like the team more likely to score first after the kickoff. Plenty of good phases of play by the forwards resulted in the break through, a well worked move through the backs resulted in Will Butcher scoring his first of three for the day.
Lydney went on the attack again from the restart and great play by the back line took us to within 5 metres of the line. A superb run cutting back inside saw Frank Barclay crash over for the second.
Lydney were now moving through the gears and Matson had no answer to the forward play they were confronted with. This allowed some magic from our open side Coby Scriven to cut through to make the score 15-0.
The game was starting to open up and this allowed the Captain Charlie Beddis to crash through from close range following some good forward drives. With the score now into the 20’s the Lydney boys seem to relax a little too much and this allowed Matson to score just before half time.
The second half got under way playing up the hill. Lydney again started strongly with a second try for Charlie Beddis. Matson managed to score a breakaway score playing an advantage well. This seemed to spur the lads and they went to full out attack mode scoring tries through Will Butcher, Coby Scriven and a superbly worked try for James Lane in which most of the team had a hand in. Some lovely switch play between Charlie Beddis and James Lane saw James run in a try under the posts, even the Matson supporters had to applaud it!
Matson managed to score a consolation try after changes were made due to injuries but all in all a very comprehensive victory away to one of our strongest opposition.
