Lydney RFC Director of Rugby Sam Arnott
As Saturday approaches, and with it my final league home game, I wanted to take a moment to reflect and say a sincere thank you to everyone connected with Lydney Rugby Club.
It has been an incredible honour to lead this club over the past four years. I’m also incredibly grateful that the club took a chance on someone with very little management experience, trusting me to take on such a prestigious role at just 31 years of age. Taking on the challenge of returning to Level 5 in my first season was no small task, and while we may not have achieved everything I initially set out to, I am immensely proud of how far we have come, both on and off the field. I truly believe we have re-established ourselves as a strong and competitive Level 5 side.
We placed our trust in a young and relatively inexperienced group, and together we learned on the job. The way those players have developed, adapted, and risen to the challenge has been outstanding. They have come through that period with real character and determination, and have proven they are more than capable at this level. Competing with a smaller squad than most has made things tough at times, but this group never shies away from any challenge put in front of them, which is exactly the DNA that this great club has been built upon since its existence.
But none of this is done alone. I must also say a huge thank you to all the coaches who have come and gone over the past four years. We have been fortunate to have some highly talented individuals who have all left their mark on the club. Of course, the same goes for all the support staff and volunteers — the unsung heroes, the oil that keeps the engine running. The operation simply cannot function without you.
To the supporters, thank you. Your backing has been superb throughout. You are the heartbeat of this club and a huge part of what makes Lydney so special. This remains one of the last proper, traditional rugby clubs, and that is down to you as much as anyone.
Whether it’s Regentsholme or down in Cornwall, you are there in your droves.
I also want to acknowledge the work being done behind the scenes as the club looks ahead. I am genuinely excited about what is being built for next season, and I have full confidence that Paul Morris (Cop) will do a tremendous job.
The foundations are there for continued progress, and I have no doubt the club will push on to new heights. I’m sure his dad will be proud, looking down on him in his new role.
It is an exciting time to be part of Lydney Rugby Club, and I feel incredibly privileged and honoured to have played my small part in its journey.
Thank you all once again for your support.
