Lydney 15’s 23 Bredon Star 10

Lydney continued their winning ways with a hard fought victory at home to Bredon Star.
Bredon won the toss and kicked off down the slope and pressurised the Lydney defence. They sustained pressure for long periods and it took a break by scrum half Luke Cunliffe to enable a break out and push Bredon to drifting offside. A penalty was awarded just outside the Bredon 22 and the first points of the game went Lydney’s way when Charlie Beddis kicked the penalty for a 3 – 0 lead. This seem to spur Lydney into life and from the kick off Lydney were quickly back on the attack into the Bredon half. Good forward play enabled a break down the left, good ball was won at the ruck and Luke Cunliffe sniped down the blindside to score under the posts. Charlie Beddis converted for a 10 – 0 lead.
The resulting restart allowed the forwards to gather the ball and another break by man of the match Luke Cunliffe saw him run the length of the pitch and a last gasp tackle by the Bredon fullback prevented what look liked a certain try for Luke. The Lydney back row managed to secure the ball and Monty Jones was on hand to pick and go and score in the corner. Conversion was missed and the half time whistle went.

The second half started in a similar fasion to the first with pressure from Bredon. Lydney held firm and some resolute defending enabled the ball to be moved wide after a turnover and another offside allowed a second penalty kick chance which Charlie Beddis converted for 18-0 lead.
Bredon were the next to score, the Lydney lads tried their best to hold them out but they managed to creep over in the corner, the conversion was missed so the score was 18-5.
This gave Lydney a boost, tired legs were showing but some great play into the corner nearly saw Lewis Price go over. The resulting Bredon lineout was a bit of a mess and Coby Scriven dived through to collect the ball and score the third try, conversion was missed and Lydney now held a comfortable 23 – 5 lead.
The last five minute saw some good play by both teams but it was Bredon to score a consolation in the corner. The conversion was missed and the ref blew the final whistle for a Lydney win.
